From ancient singing bowls, to your humble ‘lazy afternoon’ playlist, we all know the power of music to put us in a state of relaxation.
A group called Marconi Union recently earned the top spot in a list of the 10 most relaxing songs on earth. They worked with sound therapists to create the track, titled ‘Weightless’. This involved carefully arranged harmonies, rhythms, and bass lines designed to slow your heart rate, reduce blood pressure, and lower cortisol levels.
According to Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson of Mindlab International, this song produced a greater state of relaxation than any other music tested to date.
“To me, music and meditation are two aspects of the same phenomenon. And without music, meditation lacks something; without music, meditation is a little dull, unalive. Without meditation, music is simply noise – harmonious, but noise. Without meditation, music is an entertainment. And without music, meditation becomes more and more negative, tends to be death-oriented.” —Osho
Research participants attempted to solve difficult puzzles as quickly as possible, while connected to sensors and listening to various songs. Researchers measured brain activity, as well as physiological states such as heart rate, blood pressure, and their respiratory rate.
Overall, they saw a 65% reduction in overall anxiety, and a 35% reduction in usual physiological resting rates.
There’s even a 10-hour version of the track if you’d like to go deep. Apparently the track is so effective at inducing sleep, motorists have been warned not to listen to it while driving.
Sounds like the perfect soundtrack for a float. How does it make you feel?
